We love science! Exploring outside with bike rides and nature hikes are a few of our favorites. John got a metal detector form his grandparents for his birthday and he is always game for a treasure hunt. During these hot summer months we tend to spend a lot of time floating the local rivers, swimming and in general staying cool. While those are all awesome ways to explore and teach science, many of them work best when both parents are present for smoothness as well as safety. So how do we explore science indoors?
I’m fairly confident that everyone loves a good science project and the favorite amongst elementary school students, the beloved volcano! This week just for fun we are building a easy DIY volcano and its going to be epic. I think that both kids are going to love it and I can’t wait to see their reactions.
Here is what I am gathering up before we get started:
1 Craft Roll
1 dome shaped craft foam
Brown modeling clay
Orange and yellow craft paint (optional)
Red food coloring
Baking soda
White vinegar
Disposable metal baking pan
Knife
Kleenex® Brand Wet Wipes™ Gentle Clean for Hands and Face
Now you guys know I am crazy busy between writing here, homeschooling, having 2 sweet active kiddos, running a house and working as a nurse. So, I’m always looking for ways to make all of my jobs run as smooth as possible. One of my favorite “mom resources” is Walmart Online Grocery ordering with curbside pick up! I simply place my order, at anytime from my phone, sometimes this is in the wee hours of the morning or when the kids are having quiet time. The best part is I can even schedule when and where I want to pick up my order from many of their locations.
When you place your order don’t forget to gather what you need for clean up. Science is fun but it can be messy too! I ordered a package of Kleenex® Brand Wet Wipes™ Gentle Clean for Hands and Face because I know our hands are going to be pretty dirty after we use our modeling clay and our volcano erupts and these wipes are thick to get through it all but still nice and soft. Since I was placing an order I picked up a few other “standard school supplies” that we have on hand all the time, like Kleenex® Brand Ultra Soft™ Facial Tissue (strong, soft and easy on my baby’s sensitive skin). Building your Easy DIY Volcano
Place your foam piece flat side down and trace the craft tube on the top so you know how much to cut out. Cut out a circular opening that the craft tube will fit into. Now position your sandwish baggie to cover the craft tube. Press the covered craft tube up through the bottom of the foam dome. Now that it’s in place you can shape your volcano. Shave off the craft foam to get the general shape you want. Brush off any small loose pieces of foam.
The kids can now cover the foam with the brown modeling clay, make sure you read the instructions and know how long it needs to dry for. After the volcano is sculpted and and dry the kids can paint the top if desired.
When you are ready to erupt your volcano, fill the center with baking soda.
Add red food dye to your vinegar and pour into the craft tube. Stand back and enjoy those faces as they are wowed!
Make you school prep easier with Walmarts convenient online ordering and curbside pick-up. Make sure to add Kleenex® Brand Wet Wipes™ Gentle Clean for Hands and Face and Kleenex® Brand Ultra Soft™ Facial Tissue to your shopping cart!
