I can not tell you how much I am ready for the warmer weather. Winters are normally light in Central Texas and have plenty of moderately warm days mixed in with the cooler ones, but this year its been flat out cold. We’ve had multiple snow storms, lots of icy days and there has not been any outdoor swimming for sure. I think that is one of my favorite things about living in Texas, the beautiful warm days seem to out number the cooler or cold days.
I’ve shared with you before, but we participate in year round swim lessons for both kids. The stats on drowning deaths in children is heartbreaking. The Mister and I have decided that just saying and expecting to always be with our children when near water is just not enough. That is of course our number 1, but we feel like we need to also equip them with the skills to help themselves if there was ever to be an exception and they were in water solo. While swimming is fun and we love it, the heart of it is, its a skills that could one day save their lives. To keep them growing at it and comfortable in the pool we attend those weekly lessons year round. Did I mention that Emler makes learning to swim fun? John loves it, there are songs and games and he gets to show off to me, bonus there are occassionally small prizes for great listening and participation.
This semester John is learning how to swim on his back which he loves because it involves playing with a kick board. The is also learning when to pause and take a breath when swimming distances or roll on to his back and float if he needs to rest. I’ve loved watching him grow these past few weeks. He loves that he is old enough to get to wear goggles now, really goggles are amazing to preschoolers.
Mary is in a Waterbabies class this semester and is working her way through learning to hold her breath and getting use to her face getting wet. Currently she is doing a 2 second breath hold and will eventually work up to a 10 second hold. She enjoys the songs and one of her littles buddies is in the same class with her.
