Most of us probably remember the bright colored ABC magnets that adhered to our parent’s refrigerator doors as we grew up. A fun way to practice learning our alphabet as small children and later to spell out funny messages to family members. We have several fun phonics toys and love our ABC foam letters in the bathtub. I wanted to find some basic ABC magnets for the fridge too.
I kept seeing friends post about find a huge bag full of letters at thrift stores, my searches always left me empty handed. I was thrilled to walk though the Dollar Spot at my local Target and see packages on letters for $1! Target does it again.
Now the only thing I am not loving about these letters, they are neon colors. I would have embraced bold primary colors but the neon just wasn’t working for me. I decided to glam my letters up with a simple craft upgrade. While I was on the dollar aisle I also came across a simple soft plastic container that was going to be perfect for my future painting projects.
Pretty much ever spray paint project I have done resulted in a bit of paint on the ground. I was determined not to paint my patio or kill my grass this time. I picked up Krylon Gold Metallic spray paint for the glam letters. I also bought the Krylon chalk board spray paint to paint a second set of letters.
I gathered my soft plastic container to set my project in and also the high chair splat mat I use to contain food messes and headed to the backyard.
I sprayed the packet of letters with a light coat of the metallic gold and then a few minutes later did a second coat. That’s all it needed. I allowed to sit and dry outside for a few hours in the hot Texas Summer sun and we were ready to play with our new letters.
