My baby can swim, really he can. We’ve been working hard learning various swimming skills for the last 7 months at our weekly swim class. We attend our local Emler Swim School and their approach to teaching swimming is amazing. I absolutely love it and I know my little guy enjoys class too. Back to the swimming, not sure if you caught this earlier, but MY BABY CAN SWIM! Yes, I’m shouting that because I can hardly believe it.
A few months back we advanced from the Bathtime Babies class (teaches water acclimation with no submersion) to the Water Babies class (skills and submersion). He is learning skills like how to float on his back, putting his face in the water and blowing bubbles amoungst others. We’re still working on the bubbles, right now he just laughs at me when I show him how to do it. We’ll get there eventually.
He loves to sit on the wall and lean into the water for a big splash. The slide is always a moment of sheer excitement and of course the swimming. He has worked up to this a tiny bit (like 1 second) at a time each week. The goal is to build on the previous weeks experience, not push the child beyond their comfort. He can now hold his breath for 6 seconds and kick about 4-5 feet from his teacher to me. I can not tell you what a proud moment this was for me as a mom. We love the water at our house and spend a lot of time around it year round. Having Baby D learn potentially life saving skills as early as possible is very important to us.
