I have two places that I nurse Baby D, on the living room couch and in his nursery. I’ve put together a little nursing station that I can take from one place to the other with me. It helps me have everything I need on hand as well as keeps me a little entertained. To all those soon to be moms out there, I know you think you will want to spend this time staring at your sweet new buddle of joy. You can and you will for the first week or so and then you are going to realize that you can get something accomplished during this time that your sweetie is calm and quiet.
#1 A Basket– Choose something that will obviously hold everything but is also easy to move from place to place. A handle would be most ideal since you really need both hands carrying your little around (my basket was one I already had on hand).
#2 Reading Materials – I love to read and when my son got here I actually told me mom, “I may never get to read another book again.” We laugh about this now. I’ve found that the perfect time to read is while we nurse, at night time I use my ipad with low light. I love that Amazon has hundreds of FREE ebooks to download.
#3 Snacks- I try and keep a few healthy snack options in my basket at all times, some of my favorites are Luna Protein Lemon Vanilla Bars, almonds, trail mix and yogart covered pretzels.
#4 Water Bottle– This is probably the most important part of your nursing station. Staying hydrated is so important to your breastfeeding success. Becoming dehydrated can lead to decreased milk production, clogged milk ducts (you do not want to go here) and constipation in your little one. I find that a bottle with a straw works best when you have your arms full.
#5 Journal– I come up with tons of blog post ideas when we are just sitting and being calm. I keep a pen and notebook in my basket for jotting down those ideas for later elaboration.
#6 Breast Wipes– I am loving these breast wipes, during the night I don’t always want to get up after nursing and not wiping your breast off is a fast way to get yeast on them. The wipes are food safe which means they are safe for baby too. I keep these in my Nursing Station and diaper bag for when I am on the go.
#7 Ear Buds– I keep these in my ipad at all times. Sometimes a book just isn’t what want and I catch up on my favorite shows but don’t want to disturb baby with the noise.
EDITS** Now that I have nursed 2 babies till 17 and 18 months old I have a few things I would like to add to this list. These are additions that I have found make time spent breastfeeding even more comfortable for me.
#8 Chap Stick– There is nothing worse than needing chap stick and being tethered to a spot with it out of reach. If you have other children in the home I encourage you to select one that isn’t easy for them to open….and then eat.
#9 Wipes– I like something that allows me to clean my hands or a wipe up a spill. Really anything and hand wipes are awesome.
#10 Teething necklace – now my babies weren’t huge on using these to teeth with BUT they loved to play with it while nursing and it was a welcome distraction that kept them from pinching me!
#11 Breast Pads– When you’re done nursing you’ll want to replace the nursing pads in your bra. I’m a huge fan of Bamboobies washable pads, but if you prefer disposible toss a few of those in there to be handy too.
#12 Nipple Cream– I know that sounds strange but at some point you will have the most painful pain in your life… next to labor, cracked nipples. You will reconsider everything you ever thought you knew about motherhood as you push through this healing process. Bamboobies nipple balm was my go to and is safe for baby too.
Do you juggle other tasks while nursing? What would you put in your Nursing Station?
I’m pretty sure that I read the last two Twilight novels while breastfeeding my son hahaha.
YUP. This is a MUST. I didn’t realize just how immobile I would be while nursing a baby. Now I know for next time!

Great tips for first-time moms! I have to admit: when I first saw your photo I read “nursing station for the breastfeeding men” I need new glasses, LOL. Thank you so much for sharing at Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop!
Haha! I love this! I have to do a double take all the time lately.
I love the idea of creating a caddy of sorts to keep nursing supplies together. With other littles around, I’d have to put mine up high between nursing sessions, but I think it’s a great tip. Especially snacks and water. There’s nothing like realizing you’re really thirsty while your baby (lovingly) drains more and more liquid from you. I went through so much water when I was nursing!
