Pinwheel Cookies: A Family Tradition

This post may contain affiliate links.

This is a sponsored conversation with Pillsbury, all opinions are my own.

The best things about the holidays are the family traditions. Growing up we put up our tree on Thanksgiving day after we had eaten and the football game was on in the background. I loved baking cookies for the neighbors and handing our treats up and down our street. This is my favorite and the one that I have carried on.  i love to bake and its so fun to spend all year pinning amazing cookie recipes on my Pinterest board and then revisiting it and picking a few favorites. One of my favorite recipes is one that my mom taught me, pinwheel cookies.

My mom always made the dough from scratch but I’m a crazy busy mom and I love anything that helps make my life easier. I decided to use Pillsbury refrigerated ready to use sugar cookie dough to cut some of the prep time down. I divided the dough in half. Place the regular dough between parchment paper and roll it out flat. slide onto cookie sheet and place back in refrigerator.

With the remaining half of the dough place in mixer  (or kneed with hands in large bowl) with red food coloring to preference. This is also a great time to add crushed red hots to your dough for a cinnamon flavor. I was out of red hots (sad face). Mix until incorporated well. Place dough between parchment paper and roll flat.

Remove dough from fridge and without parchment paper place dough directly on top of each other. Gently roll layers together until you have a log style roll of dough. wrap in parchment paper and place in freezer for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes remove dough and slice into 1/4″ cookies. Rolling edges in sprinkles for an added touch and then baking to package directions.
