Summer is upon us and you know what that means, ROAD TRIP! We have a few trips that I am excited about this Summer. Nothing too long distance with the new baby but several day trips that I am really looking forward to. We are still getting use to life as a mini van family and I have to tell you that I love it. I never thought I would drive something other than my much loved big SUV, but the mini van is killing it. When we are getting ready to head out on to the open road there are a few things that I find essential to have or plan for.
Car Maintenance: This is super important, get that oil changed and make sure that your battery is good. Nothing can ruin a road trip and cause you stress more than car trouble when you are away from home and in a strange place.
Entertainment: The mini van or MONSTER van as JDub calls it has a media system. I like to make sure that we have a fresh supply of his favorite DVDs, a few easy to assess toys and of course his tablet with games and books loaded on it.
Food: No judgement here, this is HUGE for me. We pack snacks for in the car, but as far as stopping for meals I am super picky. We really only eat out at a few places even at home. As I am sure you know, Chick-fil-A is my go to and it’s what I look for when we are traveling too. I have my Chick-fil-A One app on my phone and it has a locator on it to help me find the nearest restaurant. Since it’s Summer, I am embracing their two NEW Summer items and I love them both. The Smokehouse BBQ Bacon Sandwich, is the first time I have really enjoyed the grilled chicken. So many yummy flavors with the mix of the BBQ, bacon, cheese, and chicken. My new weakness is the Watermelon Mint Lemonade (also available as a tea) it’s pretty to look and tastes just like Summer! I will be sad when these items leave the menu as they are seasonal. So make sure that you try them when you are on the road this Summer and if you are coming through Austin our favorite Chick-fil-A is on South Mopac!
Planning: Make sure that you have a plan in place as to how far you are traveling each day, where you are stopping and lodging that is near by. I know it sounds archaic in the digital age, but I like to have a hard copy of our plan and any reservation confirmations or tickets that we are going to need along the way. You never know when you might hit a dead zone and have no cell service.
Emergency Kit: Having an emergency kit in the car is important especially during these hot Summer months. I have a gallon of water, blanket, fire extinguisher, work gloves, head lamp, zip ties and a small tool bag.
